Hi folks, thought you may be able to suggest something !
With Murph being clipped out yesterday I put on a Heavyweight rug once we were done (been in a medium weight until now) but he was cold this morning so I took that off and put a stable rug underneath and the detachable hood on the heavyweight rug. The rug is a Derby House rug and fits fine but the hood seems to be a strange fit, he is a 5 feet 6 inch rug and it came with a medium hood, but when I put the hood on it seems a really odd shape , not wide enough at the base ( I can only do the top Velcro up for it to sit properly) and it’s a bit long but have folded down a bit at the top so its ok now but still a bit loose and big at the top so don’t know if it will be doing much good keeping him warm being so loose at the top.
I don’t know if its just the shape of this particular hood because I have used a Weatherbeeta Lightweight Combo on him with a built in neck the night before shows and they seem to be fine so I don’t know if I would be better a Weatherbeeta hood if that shape is a better fit (I don’t have one I can try) or the other thing I was thinking was a fleece snuggy hood snugy jams type thing, but that would be no good if he got wet, the fleece would be wet and would make him cold, but would be fine for when its cold but dry. I also don’t want something that’s likely to rub his main out so need to watch for that. Never had a fleece hood so don’t know how they are for rubbing out manes.
I just feel he needs something on his neck to keep it warm, William was clipped but had such a long, thick mane that he had a built in hood so he never needed anything but Murph I think could do with something on his neck to keep him warm. He’s never been clipped before and this is the first winter he’s even had a rug on, before he came to me he lived out without anything. Now he’s clipped I don’t want to ruin his nice coat and have it all growing back in quickly. So do I get him a Weatherbeeta hood or a fleece hood or what ? I am not sure what to get him for the best !
