The donkey has been doing his Christmas engagements and how things have changed.
I am middle aged bordering on old! and the churches that I remember going to as a child were dark gloomy places presided over by black crows. OK so I am exagerating somewhat but you get the idea.
Over the years the donkey has been into these establishments and we have met women vicars, recorder groups, treasure hunts, each widening my view of religious life.
Yesterday we reached a new high. A 1960's church with a red headed vicar and a congregation that was not expecting a donkey. There was a jazz band, the whole thing was a power point presentation onto the wall operated from the vicars laptop. Mary and Joseph came to the donkey during Hotel California and we entered the church room (well it seemed as if it was a dedicated room in a community hall) to a hymn that I recognised Once in Royal David's City.
The floor was highly polished wood and the poor donk found it a tad slippy so he was mincing his way forward sounding like a caterpiller with walking sticks! We came in at the back and most people were reading the words on the front wall so not looking behind them. As each row caught sight of him their faces were a picture, if only it had been videoed.
Church was never like this when I was young.
