I found this on the Somerset County Gazette:
THE wife of a Porlock man, who died after being thrown from his horse-drawn cart on Friday, has paid tribute to her 'gentle and loving' husband.
Bob Griffin, 76, was travelling with wife Valerie down a country lane near their home when tragedy struck.
The pony pulling their cart became spooked, police said, before bolting and running downhill.
"It was a freak accident and I don't know what caused it," Mrs Griffin told the County Gazette.
"Our pony, Magpie, bolted and the cart hit the bank and overturned, catapulting us out.
"I went right across the road and he fell just to the side of the trap but must have landed on his head."
advertisementMr Griffin, a keen horseman and hunt supporter, suffered serious head injuries and was taken to Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital in Exeter, where he died later the same day. Mrs Griffin was also taken to hospital but is now back at home.
Mrs Griffin said: "Bob was a worker, a doer, but never wanted the limelight.
"He was renowned for wearing his bowler hat when hunting, which was green with age.
"He was a loving family man and the grandchildren were his life. He was a gentle, kind, and honest man."
At the time of his death Mr Griffin was a treasurer of the Minehead Harriers, and treasurer of Porlock Horse Show, a post he held for 35 years.
From his first pony ride in Somerset during the 1930s Mr Griffin loved horses, and owned one from the early 70s.
In later years he enjoyed riding in his horse-drawn cart with his wife, and the pair became a familiar sight riding out near their home several times a week.
Mr Griffin also leaves his two sons, Robert, 52, and Philip, 50, and five grandchildren.
Police are trying to determine why the horse bolted. Anyone with information is asked to contact the police on 0845-4567000.

Thankyou happyhorsedriver. That is so sad, but at least he died doing what he loved. I so feel for his wife.

A very very sad accident, but a reminder of why we should all, always wear a riding hat when out with our carts. I always wear a skull cap and make sure my groom always wears one as well. Sounds like this man unfortunately was not wearing a riding hat when he was thrown from the cart.

Yes, but you also have to remember this man was 76 years old. I know a helmet can help to prevent injuries, but honestly, even if he was wearing a helmet, I'm not sure he would have pulled through.
I feel really bad for his wife and family, though he died doing something he loved.
