Hello
I have a bennington backstep for my 14.2 welsh cob. However the shafts are sitting about 2 inches too close on both sides of him. I have adjusted them as much as I can see is poss but they are still too narrow. They measure 24" apart! and I could do with them being 28" apart.
Does anyone know a good way to widen them? I spoke to bennington who said I could send them up there to be bent or do it myself but I am struggling to see how they can be bent? They are straight shafts so if they bend them will they be like the ones that have a kink? if thsi is the case they will then be too short for my boy? as they are at their longest setting now?
Confussed.com... any advice would be lovely. Thanks

Usually there is some shaping to the shafts. Loosen the shaft in the bracket in which it sits and turn the shaft so that the tip is curving downwards instead of outwards. Do this to the other shaft and you should have widened them.
Otherwise it is a case of posting pictures so that we can see the problem.

Hi yes we have twisted the shafts so that the tip is curving down and so that they are as wide as they will go but they still sit tight to my lads side Here is a pic to show what I mean This pic shows how close from in front

It seems that you could either buy new shafts or swop the carriage for a larger one. On our Benningtons there is slight adjustment on the way the shaft brackets are fastened to the carriage body as the bolt holes are slots on one piece, but I doubt that this will give enough alteration for you.

Bennington said buy new shafts or have them bent, but I cant see how new shafts will be wider unless they have a kink built in as the shafts can only be fixed at one point which determinds the width? Would this trap look right with a bent shaft? after all they are made straight so surely should be straight? no?
Bennington also said that my trap (which ahs 46" wheels) is built for a 15-15.2hh!!!! My boy is just 14.1hh so I couldn't get bigger. Which also makes me think as if my 14.1hh welsh cob doesn't fit and heavy weight 15.2hh definately wouldn't!!! Every other Bennington I've seen for sale on their second hand second has straight shafts its odd?!

These vehicles are very narrow - I have been using one exactly like this recently and was surprised just how narrow the space between the shafts was. If you could perhaps find a way to widen the brackets at the carriage end - spacers? a different type of bracket? A local blacksmith or engineering workshop might be able to help you. I don't think it should make any difference to the length of them.
