We are looking for a suitable ride and drive pony for the RDA between 14 - 15.1 hands. Why cannot people get close with the height of their animals?
What really has ticked me off was three of us travelling for 4 3/4 hours to south wales for what sounded the ideal pony. Only to find that the pony was only 13.2. We had done checks with local people about its credentials too.
Today we found one the right size only it reared when we touched its ears!
We have spent so much money looking in the last 6 months that it would have bought us another pony.
Now awaiting a reply to further questions about a pony in Ayrshire..........

Hello Rabasta, I know what you mean about people sizing horses/ponies. I remember when we were looking for a 14 hh - 14.2 hh for my daughter and travelled about viewing what SHOULD have been the right size, according to the sellers, but were in fact at least a hand smaller. Very annoying.
I can never understand why people aren't honest about all sorts of things when they are trying to sell their horse/pony as it just wastes everyone's time (and money) as no-one is going to buy something which is not as advertised.
Good luck with your search. Maybe you have found something suitable now?

Ayrshire never got back in touch and two we had arranged to go see had been sold before we got there. However today we have been to look at a pony and left a deposit.

We went to look at for a new school horse that was listed as 14.2hh and, from the photos, body type looked about right. Arrived and we found a horse with the body of a 14.2hh, but only hit about 13.3...shortest, most awkward legs. It became clear why the photo had him in grass.

We have finally found a pony this weekend. We were meant to look at two in Cumbria but both were sold before we got there. At least they rang to tell us before we had got set off. One in Lancashire was able to host us with almost no notice and the pony seems to be what is on the tin.
We have left a deposit and hope that we do not get gazumped before it comes home.

Well that pony came home but has a flaw. We cannot have him on the yard and take any other pony away or he just goes loopy. Not good in an RDA pony that we want to use while lessons are going on in a nearby arena. Brilliant in the heaviest traffic and drives a dream......
We are going to give him the time to settle and relax with us before condemming him outright.
Meanwhile we have been looking and trying others, one even came on trial but reared on being asked asked to stand while gates were being opened.
Yesterday we trailled over to the west midlands and tried a trotter x cob. A stand to die for. He may be a bit light in his mouth but he does have some sharp edges to his teeth so that may not be a problem for long. He arrives tomorrow morn so watch this space.
