Hi All I am new on here so helloo everyone I have just broken my little welsh A to drive and he is going extremley well, however I am having a few issues with the harness. I purchased a shetland harness as he is a odd size! Everything fits him perfectly apart from the traces which seem to be very long. So here comes my question, I have been wrapping the traces round the shafts so that they are not hanging to low, is this not the thing to do? Also I have noticed people talking about attaching the traces onto a swingletree however my cart doesnt have one as it is an old cart. So I just attach the traces onto the tugs at the bottom of cart. It seems things have changed since I broke my first pony to drive all them years ago as none of the carts seemed to have the swingle trees fitted? Many thanks for reading. x

If you use a breast collar then you must use a swingletree otherwise you end up with rubbed shoulders. Old carriages were made for old harness which nearly always had a full collar.
It is an easy job to get traces shortened by your local saddler.

Thank you for your reply Will talk to my saddler and see if he will shorten Do you know where I would need to look for someone to attach a swingletree? Thanks

Now that one is a bit harder as it needs to be someone who can see the carriage and its stress points. Then they need to work out the best way of fixing it. Not knowing what area you are in also precludes me from knowing anyone who could do the job.
