I put my boy in my trap yesterday to have a quick fitting. We knew that it would need some blocks as it has been on a 13.3hh pony and my boy is 14.2hh. My question really is what is the limit you can get away with raising a boy on blocks? How low should the tug holes be, could I perhaps lower them to help a touch. Also should the tug straps that go on the swingle tree be a bit tighter? They do tigthen up when he is pulling it. Thanks in advance

Hi there Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but with this vehicle even if you did block it up it would still be to small for your horse you ideally want everything to be level. My advice would be to look for another vehicle that will fit your boy better, you can pick up some decent exercise vehicles at reasonable prices on dragon driving or similar websites. Good luck and hope you find an ideal vehicle for you and your boy.

I third, the shafts are not nearly long enough either. I am questioning if it may have been too small for your smaller pony also

Hello yes I have now got another trap. A bennington backstep buggy and it fits my boy a lot better. I have done loads of ground work with him lately so after an 8 year break I put him back in the trap yesterday and went for a short drive. Just had my mum have a hold of him for the first time on the road Then we were away I am a little annoyed as I brought the first trap off experienced people who asured me that they had driven a 13.3hh in it reguarly and even had a 14.1hh cob in it and as I am not that experienced I put my trust in them. I now have the smaller trap to sell which isn't ideal.

That looks much better and I do like your pony. Your Mum is doing brilliantly!! Well done her. I hope you have lots of fun with the pony and trap, and also hope that you can sell the smaller trap without too much trouble. Good luck.

Looks much better and that is a good looking pony. You might want to shorten your traces as they look way to long. Look at the 1st picture when you are moving you are not in draft.

When you are driving along keep an eye on your traces - they should be tight when the pony is moving (he pulls the vehicle with the traces on his breast collar, the shafts are for steering). Other than that your turnout looks much better and your new carriage fits the pony really well now. And what a smart pony he is! Enjoy!!
