I am in need of some advice on how to deal with this problem from a carriage driving perspective. My horse will go for some distance and then stop. She will not move until my groom ( suffering wife ) gets down and walks along side the horse. The horse - Roo - will then happily set off again and we are fine until my wife gets back in the carriage. Roo may stop again and we have to repeat the above. I have tried waiting Roo out by just standing still. 25 minutes later she did move. We still have the problem. I have tried rhythmically tapping her on the rear till she moves. No success. I have tried moving her her head from side to side. I have tried backing her up. All can sometimes be successful but she will stop next time out. It is usually when we do a drive out of the village that she will stop. If we are just doing a quick round the village (approx 30 mins) drive she is fine. In all other respects she is great. I have checked and had checked her harness and all is ok with it. Suggestions welcome.

It might be a confidence issue (she is reluctant to go outwith her comfort zone?) I would do a bit of work with her on long reins (maybe in an open bridle) and try not to have anyone on foot so she comes to trust your driving more. Is she quite forward going? Or is she rather slow and steady? Stopping like this IS a disobedience and if you are sure there is no reason for it other than her making the decision not to go any further than a sharp flick with the whip might be required. You really can't have her ignoring you, if she does it in a traffic situation it could become a lot more serious.

Thanks - sorry been away. I have re-visited ground work with her and will see how she goes. She is not really forward going and in most other respects is reliable and very well behaved. Interestingly on our last outing, when Roo stopped, my Wife walked ahead while I made Roo stand still. Once my Wife was out of sight (in a field) I let her move forward at a walk. My Wife was able to get into the carriage as we passed at a slow walk. Roo went all the way for the rest of the outing without any problem. She stopped, walked and trotted to command.

I hesitate to give advice, not knowing either you or your pony, but it sounds to me as if she is playing you up. How about getting an experienced driver to drive her out with you acting as groom and she what he/she thinks? Also, are you a member of the BDS or local driving club? They are both very good and helpful with advice and experience. Maybe taking your pony out on a social drive with others would get her more forward-going. She could also be bored if you are doing the same route time and time again. If it is possible to ride her (or get someone to ride her) that could help keep her interested in her work and give her something else to think about. Only my thoughts. Best of luck.
