This is probably a question for Zoonie - sorry for not being very active at the moment but the season is rather hectic! -be back after - promise!
Need to do a bit of a quick fix for a rather big competition this coming week -globally the ponies are really going not bad but they are not naturally very athletic and fast and I am getting to the limit of the level of what they are really capable - the speeds are so fast in the cones (240m/min in my catagorie) for example that they cannot compete with small welshies that can turn on a sixpence - they are not fast (to repeat myself) and are rather like tanks in comparaison so any advantage I get in the dressage disapears. Anyway the question doesn't really concern this but is would I be best putting the "stiff" side of each pony to the outside and the "soft" side next to the pole or vice versa? I normally drive stiff side to the pole but last competion tried the other way round and it was a sucess, a fluke or what do you think? They are schooled a lot under saddle and also as singles but need a bit of input - thanks

I am certainly no expert but if it worked last time I would do it again.

Never thought about it that way Fly but sounds like it's working for you so far. Our boys are chopped and changed around regularly so they don't get too fixed in their way of going. What kind of vehicle do you drive - does it have a sprung pole and delayed steering? I think the cones times are a bit ridiculous now tbh and people are either taking risks or talking about using marathon vehicles! In cones I tend to think about driving the carriage rather than the engine .

Thanks for your replies, I do swop them a lot at home but do tend to drive at competitions the same way around, but like all ponies and horses they do have a stiff side. The said competition has been and gone, whatever I did would have made no difference to the disaster - "official stabling" was obligatory except for the first time ever when this has been the case the boxes were not allocated and I was unable to have the boys side by side, to put it in a nutshell one blew a fuse and they were not their usual selves, shall we say a bit tired (they finished the weekend together(two 147cm 450kg haffies in a 9 square meter stable!), still you live and learn! (we shall throw our toys out of the pram next time...........) Incidently I have a khulé pairs vehicle with sprung pole and delayed steering etc - I don't have a presentation vehicle for the pair . I probably do tend to think and analyse things perhaps too much Zoonie!! The "engine" in my vehicle is very much an bounce up and down, look pretty and go nowhere one with a dubious accelarateur and drama queen tendancies . However hope is on the horizen I am really enjoying driving the new (grey) pony - she covers the ground so easily, no feeling of the accelerateur to the floor, the engine just purrs, a real sport model! I just need to find another one! How is your season going?

Been a bit of a strange season as I've been in the Advanced class with no ambition to go for selection for team GB so just 'being there' really - Gypsy has been super and is really getting the hang of the Advanced test - he enjoys the canter and is getting the hang of all the transitions from collection to extensions and my marks have been better than I expected. He's done so well for a little pony who was bought as a safe 'starter' pony for me to have a go with! Had a good weekend at West Newton where we won our class and were Champions of the weekend with hubby Reserve - very happy and looking forward to the National Championships in a fortnight. Can't believe the season is almost over!
