As I was about to set off for a long walk with the dogs around a local common/bit of forestry my OH departing in a car told me that a heifer had started calving could I keep an eye on it. That meant no walk so I thought I would take a sequence of calving photos with my still newish camera.
So I waited and waited and waited and still the begger wouldnt get on with things. So decided to investigate. Everything normal but huge. So called in reinforcements in the form of my townee neighbours. They were delighted and turned up on motorbikes.
Halter on and one neighbour on the end of it after wrapping round a substantial post. Calving ropes on and strain taken by me and the other neighbour. Then a lot of strain just stopping the calf from returning back inside mum. Millimetre by millimetre it came out.
Imagine the scene me in dog walking togs and them in their weekend smarts, at least one had a pair of wellies on. Faces bright red, sweat running off everyone and calving gunk spread liberally around by an unsecured tail.
Once the head was out things happened a little bit faster and us on the ropes landed on the floor backwards. So cow poo all down the back of us, calving slime down the front of us - camera still in its bag.
And what does the neighbour on the halter say?
It wasnt like this on Lambing Live!

A limousin heifer so no doubt it will be causing chaos all its life.
