Found these old photos I thought I would share. When I was 11 years old I got my first pony, a 12.2 hh'ish Welsh (he did have papers but I never got them) I had done very little riding before I got him and never had a lesson before I got him. It was more a case of "You wanted a pony ! We have got you one so get on with it ! " so we did ! This is me on him the first day I got him. I had a skull cap (but no cover !) and joddy boots but that was it, no jodds or anything. What a state I look ! I look like a sack of spuds ! A few weeks later a friend and I decided we were going to take him to a wee local show a couple of miles away. We had no transport so rode there. I had jodds by this time (Black ones however !) but still no cover for my skull cap. The jacket was a borrowed, home made affair, the shirt was an old school one and the tie one of my dads. We did the "Riding Pony" class. I had only cantered for the first time the day before and had not had a proper lesson. Talk about poking his nose out ! This was latter that summer, still no cover for the skull cap ! I think these were the next summer. That pony loved jumping. For a small pony he could really jump. These were old dining seats with high backs so a decent height fence. Don’t you just love our fancy jumps ! He was a real sweet pony. I thought it would be a good idea to "Say Please !" He used to lift his leg for a treat ! Not a smart move, he used to go around doing it all the time to see if he got something !

Brilliant pics Kaz!! I know what you mean about making do - your photos take me back to my youth. We used to use spud (potato boxes) as jump stands!

One day I will find some pics of our home made jumps. Drain pipe poles (cast iron) and bed end wings.

Lovely photos, brings back memories, hacking to shows, homemade jumps, no extra tack or riding clothes other than the bare minimum...........
