I actually think the fun element is disappearing more because of HSE rules than anything else.

HSE can be a bother, but you can work it in to a fun day.

No I have noticed the trend well before HSE became more of the in thing,I am meaning there is too much competitieveness, not so much from the younger contestants, but their hingers on ..particular the parents..the so called mounted games..become more like open warfare..and older competitors too are increasingly resorting to the more competitive edge too ..they are taking things far too seriously.with regards winning a class..as opposed to enjoying themselves. And especially when I think of the time I was entered into a show jumping class with a horse who was a total bruiser..but that is another story for another time......maybe

I have seen kids in a certain niche of the equine world, made scapegoats by the owners of the ponies they ride, because they didn't win a certain class or they fell off. I have seen and heard 6 and 7 year old kids being shouted at outside the ring and reduced to tears, and these loyal little riders come back for more because they love riding. it breaks my heart.
If the owners of these ponies want to win so much why don't THEY get on and do the winning and leave the poor kids to have fun.

Oh then again I could possibly start a whole section on here with some of the stories I could tell from ''incidents '' at shows ..some of them funny, some verging on the totally stupid and some of an embarrassing nature lol..well embarrassing for those involved..lol

When I was a kid, I got to ride at Ponies Of britain as it was in those days! We were in the fancy dress class and I was doing the national costume of Austria with a Haflinger and all the trad tack and stuff. Only I was sitting side saddle on an ordinary side saddle with a skirt with loads and loads of underskirts!
Worzel Gummage and his attendants broke free and galloped around the show ring spooking all the other ponies, I fell off backwards in the big ring with, If I remember, some kind of full grandstand. There I lay, skirts over my face and my knickers on show to the entire world!
I still have the comemorative medal somewhere! (not for the best display of underwear, it was some kind of anniversary thing)

There has always been the over competitive pony club mother. Back in the days when I was in the pc one parent was noted for her interference in the gymkhana games, moving other kids bending poles, picking up her ofsprings potatoes and putting them in the bucket.....AND threatening the judges both before and after the events. Her children were so embarrassed by her. Pony club got even more competitive off the ponies at the inter branch hockey match. The Badsworth DC picked up the Goole and District DC by the lapels and shook him when his team were losing.

Can we have a new section for weekly instalments of cuddybuddy's tales from the shows? It would keep me amused for a while!! Tell us about the bruiser..... :-)

Oh my word! Wally I've just snorked my morning coffee up my nose laughing over this one. Sorry to be laughing but my word, that's something that easily could have happened to me as a kid! Pity my parents have such the averson to horses and ponies Oooh, I'd LOVE a section of funny stories! I've thoroughly enjoyed these tales from the trenches. And I'd love to hear about the bruiser as well. ;D
