Having been on the wrong end of a shetland I know that they can be savage sods, perhaps that is why they are not my favourite breed.......... Give me a donkey any day, but even then they can be nasty if they have been handled wrong.

Hi just looked at photies, poor Bert that looks so sore. Speaking as a Shetland breeder myself it has to be remembered that for every Shetland stallion that someone gaily says 'Oh he'll live out quietly with geldings', there are a least 4 that will kill a gelding on sight, they can be very territorial and they never seem to know that they are the smaller animal, (that also go's for the mares they aspire to cover as well!) Hope that they are all better soon, ans the big fellow doesn't loose any of his beauty, Fal

Oh Shetlands! don't you just luv em........ They are a bit spicey arn't they ;D? Ours was a supreme escape artist and bully. The daily ritual was hunt Ollie, was he in the woods or scoffing hay in the barn or hassling the mares, even in the garden a couple of times who knows. 'little rat' We tried to give him away twice, but he kept getting returned! We then put him up for sale. Someone came to see him and never came back. Then someone else agreed to take him. I got cold feet and decided to keep him. He's had the chop now, he drives a treat, no longer escapes and is totally at his peak and has stamina like you wouldn't believe. I will never get rid of him now as he's the school master. He is the boss of the paddock and teaches the others their manners. PS he thinks he's 16hh

We have a little shetland size pony too - like you I would never sell him - we have two strands of electric fencing for his benefit - not for the bigger ponies!
